Golfdom 2014 Herb Graffis Businessperson of the Year Jim Rattigan of Schuylkill Country Club received a nice write-up in the Republican Herald, the local newspaper for Pottsville in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania.

Rattigan, the superintendent and director of operations at the club, told the newspaper he has been a lifetime lover of golf, building his career from the ground up as a teenager. He admitted that he was unfamiliar with Graffis prior to his nomination.

“I didn’t even know who he was,” Rattigan admitted to the newspaper. “But when I was approached by the whole thing, I looked him up. … He basically got everyone together and said, ‘Guys, we’re going to make money on this.’ ”

The course at Schuylkill was designed by golf course designer Donald Ross, and Golfdom recognized Rattigan’s vision of both restoring the course and maintaining its history and tradition.

“He’s gotten those guys to bring some of the Don Ross out of that course,” said Golfdom Editor-in-Chief Seth Jones in a phone interview with the newspaper. “It’s not just him doing a good job — it’s also him being a good steward of the history of the game.”
