Pest Management Professional promotes two editors, hires digital content producer

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Oct. 13, 2015 — North Coast Media is pleased to announce two promotions and a new addition to the staff of Pest Management Professional (PMP).

Diane Sofranec has been named managing editor of PMP. She succeeds Heather Gooch, who has been promoted to editor of the magazine.

“Heather joined the magazine shortly after college in 1995 as an assistant editor, and stayed with us as managing editor until 2005,” recalls Marty Whitford, PMP’s publisher and editorial director. “She left to spend more time with her husband and two daughters, but still did a lot of behind-the-scenes editing and other freelance work for us. When she returned to the managing editor spot last January, we were thrilled to have Heather back on board full time. We look forward to her continued leadership in her new role as editor.”

Gooch, a Kent State University graduate, has won numerous awards from the American Society of Business Publication Editors (ASBPE) and The Press Club of Cleveland. She can be contacted at 330-321-9754, or hgooch@northcoastmedia.net.

“Diane has been a wonderful addition to our staff as digital editor, and she really was the ideal choice to slip into Heather’s managing editor role,” Whitford says of Sofranec. “She, Heather, Will [Nepper] and I agree that this is a four-star, ‘A-Team’ lineup in that there are more than 100 years of combined editorial experience in our team. It’s one of the most talented groups I’ve ever worked with.”

Sofranec, a graduate of Youngstown State University, has more than 20 years of experience in the B2B publishing industry. She joined North Coast Media in 2013 as a digital content producer, and during her time with the company, has had a hand in Landscape Management, Golfdom, LP Gas, Pit & Quarry, Portable Plants and Equipment, and PMP. Sofranec’s previous position in the digital media department has been filled by new hire Kelly Limpert. Sofranec can be contacted at 216-706-3793, or dsofranec@northcoastmedia.net.

Limpert joined North Coast Media’s digital team this summer. Limpert, a graduate of Ohio University’s E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, will be creating digital content for PMP. She can be reached at 216-363-7933, or klimpert@northcoastmedia.net.

PMP, a North Coast Media brand, has been the editorial authority for the pest management industry since 1933.

Staff App Review: Waze

By Michelle Mitchell

mzl.ieanwddnOne of my favorite apps is Waze. Waze is a community-based traffic and navigation app. Drivers in your area share real-time traffic and road info, saving everyone time and gas money on their daily commute.  I use the app often…saves me from potentially sitting in traffic…or even from potentially getting a ticket as the app, not only shows you when there is slow traffic or an accident, but also where police are sitting!

The Martian’s ingenuity is out of this world

By Tracy Cozzens | Managing Editor, GPS World magazine

Last year on my way home from the ION GNSS + Conference in Tampa, I spotted a bright orange book in the San Francisco airport. The Martian, by Andy Wier, is now a major motion picture.

The Martian explores how a lone astronaut struggles to survive long enough to be rescued from the Red Planet. Weir sets his story in the near future, and grounds it in real-world science. How can a man survive in a hostile environment far longer than the supplies left for him will hold out? What life-support systems can he engineer with the resources on hand?

From page one, I was plunged into a gripping adventure — sometimes on the edge of my seat, sometimes thinking about engineering and science in new ways. I found myself re-reading explanations for astronaut Mark Watney’s resourceful solutions (shades of MacGyver) to make sure I understood what he was attempting and how it might actually work. But Weir also infuses the story with tongue-in-cheek humor, so the story was never dry. It moves quickly, jumping between Watney’s situation on Mars and mission control back on Earth.

One sequence in the book describes Watney’s remarkable ingenuity in solving a navigation problem in a truly GPS-denied environment, with only the limited supplies he has on hand. I don’t want to spoil anything, but I will say that the solution includes old-school triangulation, with a few twists. With a fierce dust storm bearing down on him, Watney employs his knowledge of positioning, navigation and timing in an effort to aid his own rescue. This scene reminded me of how my magazine, GPS World, includes many location technologies because GPS, while still in our name, is far from the only solution.

Now The Martian is a major motion picture, with a cast of A-listers and starring Matt Damon as Watney, the futuristic Robinson Crusoe. While it’s easier to watch a two-hour movie, I suggest anyone who’s fascinated by the science in fiction pick up a copy of the novel that inspired it.
